If you’re moving to Alaska, you’re probably racking your brain trying to think of all the things you may or may not need when you get there. Any outdoor enthusiast will tell you that the right gear makes all the difference, and the same is true with living a life in Alaska. At Golden North Van Lines, we’ve helped countless customers with their moves to or from Alaska, so we have a good idea of what you’ll want to pack. We’ve come up with a few things to keep in mind when you’re packing for your big move.
Outdoor Gear
When it comes to the cold weather of Alaska, outdoor gear is definitely a must. Make sure you have a heavy-duty parka, a high-quality winter hat, a scarf or balaclava, and weather-resistant waterproof gloves to keep you warm throughout the winter. Don’t rush out and buy any cold-weather bib overalls, however, unless you know you’ll be working outdoors or on the water.
Layers
It’s no secret that Alaska gets chilly, and layers are an excellent choice for keeping warm during cold weather. We recommend bringing two sets of thermal underwear as well as any fleece jackets and flannel or fleece-lined jeans. You should avoid taking anything with cotton as cotton absorbs moisture and takes a long time to dry which could potentially leave you even colder.
Foot Protection
If you prepared your entire outfit for retaining heat and staying warm and then paired it with flip-flops, it would be an entire waste of time! Your feet are just as important, and you should plan to bring waterproof boots that will keep your feet warm and dry in the snow. Pair them with nice wool socks, and your toes will stay toasty warm all winter long.
Around the House
Alaska is different than anywhere else in the world, and there’ll be things that you’ll need to adjust to. We recommend bringing a sleeping mask for the sunny summer nights, as well as warm slippers to keep you cozy throughout the cold winters. If you have the space, a few extra blankets will always come in handy for some additional warmth on really chilly nights. Some people may say to bring blackout curtains, but it’s better to purchase those once you get there so you’re absolutely certain that they’ll fit your windows.
