Big moves can be very stressful, however, there are some benefits! Take advantage of your upcoming move to sort through all of your belongings and get organized. When you get to the unpacking part of your move, you will thank yourself for all of your hard work getting organized.
First, set up areas on each floor of your home with boxes labeled Keep, Sell, Donate, and Trash. Get your entire family involved and go through every single room and add items to the bins that apply. Sell or consign items that qualify at local children boutiques or on eBay if you have the time and commitment. If not, usable items can be donated to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Schedule a pick-up and the donation company will come straight to your home and pick up all of the items you no longer want. For unwanted appliances and other junk items that can’t go to a donation center, check out your local Junk haul away services. The last thing you want to do is pack and move items no longer in good working order.
When you complete the large task of sorting all of your household good. Organize items by putting together like items. Golden North Van Lines suggests making sure that all family photos and memorabilia be stored separately from household goods so that they don’t get lost or ruined by being packed amongst other things. Other important items that should be properly sorted are important household documents. You don’t want birth certificates and related items packed in random boxes.
Before all of your electronics are disassembled or unwired, take pictures! Taking pictures of how electronics are assembled will help you when you unpack. During the busyness of a move, taking pictures can be a great assistant when you start to put computers, printers or gaming devices back together in your new home.
Make an “Open Me First” box. An Open Me First Box may contain first day essentials such as toilet paper, paper towels, and whatever else you may need for your first day in a new home. Just make sure that whatever you pack in your Open First Box is in compliance with the packing regulations of your moving company, you can check the non-allowable list at Golden North Van Lines.
